Fire Suppression with Water Mist – less water, greater efficiency

The Water Mist System is one of the most advanced fire protection solutions on the market, based on fixed water extinguishing systems – in particular high-pressure water mist installations as well as conventional sprinkler and deluge systems.

In cooperation with the renowned German manufacturer FOGTEC, mcr introduces proven fire suppression solutions to the market.

High-Pressure Water Mist System – Design and Operation

The combination of a specially designed nozzle and high pressure generates a water mist with a reaction surface over 200 times larger compared to a conventional sprinkler.

The mist produced by the high-pressure system is a suspension of water droplets ranging from 50–120 μm. This fine atomization gives the extinguishing medium unique properties that make it more effective than water delivered through standard sprinkler heads.

Water mist suppresses fire while using 7 to 9 times less water than traditional sprinkler systems. This significantly reduces the risk of flooding damage and, in turn, the risk of property losses and costly production downtime.

The Extinguishing Mechanism of High-Pressure Water Mist:

  • Cooling – Water absorbs heat from the combustion process both by heating up and by evaporating. The combined surface of the droplets is hundreds of times larger than in a standard system, enabling water to absorb up to ten times more heat per unit mass compared to conventional sprinkler systems.
  • Local oxygen displacement – During evaporation, water expands up to 1700 times its original volume, displacing oxygen from the fire zone.
  • Radiant heat blockage – By saturating the space with mist, radiant heat is absorbed, preventing re-ignition and further temperature rise. This is especially valuable in protecting nearby structures (e.g., load-bearing elements, production lines) from overheating.

Additionally, the mist spreads through air convection, reaching shielded areas such as under machinery.

Water Mist System

Each project is designed according to strict FOGTEC guidelines (DESIGN MANUAL) and full-scale fire tests. Only the combination of these ensures a system properly tailored and effective for its application.

Based on the design manual, the designer selects nozzle type, parameters, layout, as well as pump size and water storage tank capacity.

FOGTEC installations are designed according to globally recognized standards: NFPA 13 (hazard classes LH, OH1) and VdS 3188 (OH1 to OH3), as well as manufacturer-specific guidelines based on full-scale fire tests (e.g., tunnels, cable rooms, battery rooms, flammable liquids).

In many cases, the FOGTEC system, after expert evaluation, may serve as an equivalent solution that allows for relaxation or exemption from certain fire safety code requirements (e.g., fire resistance ratings). This is possible thanks to its greater extinguishing efficiency compared to conventional large-droplet systems.

This tailored approach ensures both high system flexibility and efficient use of materials.

A distinctive feature of every water mist system are the modern, precisely engineered nozzles, which can be installed not only on ceilings or walls but also in raised floors.

Water distribution piping is made of stainless steel AISI 316L (EN 1.4404), with diameters from 10 to 60 mm. Thanks to high hydraulic flexibility, pressure losses are minimized even over long distances, enabling complex systems to run from a single pump unit. The precision and cleanliness of the installation ensure long service life.

The use of small pipe diameters (DN12–60) reduces building loads and simplifies installation in shafts and suspended ceilings. If the facility is expanded, the system can be economically and quickly extended.
